Notifications and swipe gestures

Notifications are a trade: information against interruption. YouniqMail lets you set the exchange rate yourself, from “every mail speaks up” to “I check when I choose to”.

When a new mail arrives, YouniqMail announces it with a system notification and a sound. By default, this applies to the inbox of every account, and also to the “Important” and “Flagged” folders where the server offers them. Mail in other folders stays silent.

Under Settings → Notifications you set what the notification looks like, for example with Prefer sender name over email address. A preview shows the result.

With Pro, two things are added:

  • Per account and folder: you decide yourself which accounts and folders speak up. The work account may speak up, the account for orders and newsletters stays silent, and the folder of an important project speaks up as well.
  • Action buttons: Archive, Delete, Move to Junk and Reply right in the notification, plus, if you like, Inline reply, a text field for replying without a compose window. There are no buttons on Linux.

Mails that a rule moves to another folder right on arrival do not trigger a notification.

The Do not disturb button in the header bar turns off notifications and sound: For 1 hour, For 2 hours, Until this evening (18:00), Until tomorrow morning (08:00) or Permanent. New mail keeps arriving, just without interruption. Turn off ends the quiet early.

Under Settings → Sound you switch the sounds for new mail, for sending and for deleting on or off one by one, and can listen to them first. The classic: notification on, sound off. The information arrives without filling the room.

With two fingers on the trackpad (or by scrolling horizontally) you handle the most common actions right in the message list: swiping left and right.

Under Settings → Swipe Actions you assign both directions yourself, with Archive, Mark as Read, Mark as Unread, Move to Junk, Delete or Snooze (until tomorrow), which snoozes the mail until 9 a.m. tomorrow. None (disabled) turns off one direction, Enable swipe actions the gestures as a whole. The Sensitivity (Low, Medium, High) sets how far the gesture must travel before it triggers.

By default, right is archive and left is delete: the most frequent action on the right, the more consequential one on the left.

The dock or taskbar icon counts unread mail. If the number stresses you more than it informs you, switch it off under Settings → Dock / Windows with Show badge. There you also decide whether all mail or only unread mail counts and from which accounts or folders, and whether the icon bounces or flashes on new mail.
