Sending and undoing
Between the click on Send and the actual dispatch there can be a configurable window. Within that window, any mail can be pulled back: the lifeline for the forgotten attachment and the wrong recipient.
Undo send
Section titled “Undo send”After you click Send, the compose window closes, and a banner appears at the bottom of the main window with a countdown (“Sending in … seconds…”) and an Undo button. Click it and the mail reopens in the editor as if nothing had happened. It never left your machine.
The length of the window is set under Settings → Compose → Compose at Undo Send, from 5 to 60 seconds. The setup wizard sets 5 seconds. With Send immediately, every mail goes out without an undo window.
If you quit YouniqMail while mails are waiting in the undo window, they go out immediately. If the app has restarted in the meantime, the banner only shows the countdown, without Undo.
The outbox
Section titled “The outbox”Mail that is not yet on the server gathers under the Outbox / Pending Actions entry in the sidebar: the mail inside its undo window, mail waiting for a connection, and failed send attempts. The entry only appears when something is pending and shows the number of waiting mails, with a red exclamation mark if there is an error. The section has two tabs: Outbox for mail and Pending Actions for other actions waiting for the connection.
Being offline does not stop you from sending: the button then reads Queue for sending, the mail waits in the outbox and goes out as soon as the connection returns. While you are offline, the header also shows how many mails are waiting in the outbox.
If a send attempt fails, YouniqMail automatically tries again, up to three times in total. After that, the mail stays in the outbox as failed and carries the error message, for example when the server rejects the recipient address. From there you can open and correct it with Edit in compose, try again with Retry sending, or delete it.
If you send with Send immediately while connected, a rejected mail does not end up in the outbox. The error message then appears directly in the compose window, and the mail stays open there.
Send actions
Section titled “Send actions”The Send button can do more than send. In the menu next to it (More send options), and configurable as the default under Settings → Compose → Compose at Default Send Action:
- Send: the normal case.
- Send & archive: dispatches the reply and moves the whole conversation you are replying to into the archive as soon as the server has accepted the mail. For inbox-zero types.
- Send & remove all flags: sends and removes the flags from all mails of the conversation you are replying to.
The additional send actions belong to the Pro feature set.
What deliberately does not exist
Section titled “What deliberately does not exist”Scheduled sending (“send tomorrow at 8:00”) is not offered by YouniqMail at present. The reason is honesty about how it works: YouniqMail is a local program without its own server. A scheduled mail could only leave while your machine is running. A promise that fails at a closed laptop lid is one we would rather not make.
