Managing newsletters

Newsletters are every mailbox’s quiet space eaters: harmless one by one, half the inbox in sum. YouniqMail detects them during sync and gathers them in an overview of their own. Unsubscribing becomes a matter of seconds instead of a hunt through the fine print.

Open Settings → Mails → Newsletters. It lists every detected newsletter, grouped by account, with sender, rough frequency, how much of it you read and, in a wide window, the number of emails received. At the top you filter by All, Active and Unsubscribed and search the list by name or address.

Detection relies on the markers reputable senders attach to their mail, above all the standardized unsubscribe headers, plus typical senders such as newsletter@ and an unsubscribe link in the text. A circular disguising itself as personal mail can slip past detection; conversely, a normal email occasionally lands in the list too. Remove takes an entry out of the overview without unsubscribing.

If something is missing, rerun detection over all mail under Settings → Advanced with Regenerate Newsletter Detection. This needs a connection to the server.

Click Unsubscribe on the newsletter, or select several and click Unsubscribe Selected. Directly in a newsletter email, use the notice This email is from a newsletter. or Unsubscribe from newsletter in the menu.

YouniqMail uses the opt-out path the sender gives in the mail: preferably one-click unsubscribe, otherwise an unsubscribe email from the address the newsletter was sent to. Both happen only if YouniqMail can prove via DKIM signature that the information really comes from the sender; to do so it reads a recent email of the newsletter from the server, so you need a connection.

If that does not work, unsubscribing a single newsletter opens the sender’s unsubscribe page in the browser. With a multiple selection this route does not exist; unsubscribe such newsletters one by one.

The newsletter then moves to the unsubscribed list, so you keep track of what you have already shed. With the browser route it counts as unsubscribed as soon as the page is open: so finish the unsubscribe there as well.

Taming newsletters instead of unsubscribing

Some newsletters you want to keep, just not in the inbox. The recipe is a rule:

  1. Create a rule: condition on the sender, actions Add tag (“Newsletter”) and Move to mailbox.
  2. Optionally Mark as read, so the unread counter stays quiet. Sound and notification are skipped anyway when mail is filed away.
  3. A smart folder on the tag makes the collected issues visible on demand, coffee-break reading, for instance.
