Mapping folders
Five folders play a special role: Sent, Drafts, Trash, Junk / Spam and Archive. YouniqMail needs to know which server folder plays which role. Otherwise sent mail lands in the wrong folder, deleting creates a new “Trash” folder although a trash folder has long existed, or archiving fails because no archive folder is known.
Usually this happens by itself
Section titled “Usually this happens by itself”Modern mail servers label their folders with their role, and YouniqMail adopts that labeling during sync. Where the label is missing, YouniqMail recognizes the usual folder names. With Gmail, Microsoft, iCloud and most large providers there is therefore nothing to do.
Manual work is needed mainly with unusual folder names, or when a
mailbox has lived through years of different programs and collected
several “Sent” folders: Sent, Sent Messages and Gesendete Objekte
side by side are not rare.
Check and change the mapping
Section titled “Check and change the mapping”- Open Settings → Email Accounts.
- Select the account.
- The Folder Mapping section shows the currently linked server folder for each of the five roles. If a role is not assigned, the selection stays empty.
- Pick a different folder from the list if needed. The change takes effect immediately.
The list shows the folders found by the last sync. If a freshly created folder is missing, let the account sync once and select the account again. If there is only a note asking you to sync the account first, the first sync has not delivered any folders yet.
What the mapping controls
Section titled “What the mapping controls”| Role | Controls |
|---|---|
| Sent | Where outgoing mail goes after sending |
| Drafts | Where unfinished mail is stored |
| Trash | Where deleted mail goes |
| Junk / Spam | Where Move to spam moves mail |
| Archive | Where Archive moves mail |
With Gmail as well as Microsoft 365 and Outlook, the server files the copy of sent mail in Sent itself. YouniqMail does not upload a copy of its own there, so nothing shows up twice.
The mapping also feeds the grouped mailboxes: “All Trash” collects the folders mapped as trash. Accounts with the Exclude from grouped mailboxes setting are missing there.
Creating and arranging folders
Section titled “Creating and arranging folders”New folder: Right-click a folder in the sidebar and choose New Mailbox…. You specify the location and the name, and YouniqMail creates the folder on the server.
Order: Top-level folders can be rearranged by drag and drop within their account.
Renaming and deleting server folders is not offered in YouniqMail. Do that in your provider’s webmail; YouniqMail picks up the change at the next sync. Only local folders, which exist solely on your computer, are deleted in YouniqMail itself, with Delete Local Folder… in the context menu.
A folder’s context menu also offers Export as mbox, Force full resync of mailbox and, for the trash, Empty trash, for the spam folder Delete all junk.
