Adding an account

YouniqMail knows the server settings of the common providers and fills them in for you. Usually it is enough to pick the provider and enter your credentials.

You can set up as many accounts as you like, including on the free plan.

  1. Settings → Email Accounts
  2. Add Email Account. The setup wizard opens in a window of its own, and the settings close.
  3. Pick your provider
  4. Enter Your name, address and credentials, or sign in with the provider
  5. Test Connection, then Continue
  6. On the Account added successfully page, click Finish. Only now does YouniqMail save the account and start syncing.

You can also reach the wizard via the Add new mail account… menu item in the YouniqMail menu.

The connection test is mandatory. Only when it succeeds does Continue appear. That saves you from errors whose cause is hard to track down later.

Sign in with the provider: the most convenient and safest path. No password ends up in YouniqMail, and the sign-in happens in your default browser.

Available for Microsoft 365 and Outlook.

App password: a password generated specifically for this program. Required by providers without a sign-in flow.

Needed for Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and a few others. For Gmail, the app password is currently the only path, because signing in with Google is temporarily unavailable.

Regular password: works with many smaller providers, with your own servers and with self-hosted Exchange.

Applies to GMX and WEB.DE, Posteo, mailbox.org, Mailo and Microsoft Exchange, among others.

Companion app: Proton Mail does not allow direct access and needs the Proton Bridge. See Setting up Proton Mail.

Ready-made settings exist for these providers:

Gmail · Microsoft 365 · Outlook · Microsoft Exchange · iCloud · GMX · WEB.DE · Yahoo Mail · Fastmail · Zoho Mail · Posteo · mailbox.org · Mailfence · Mailo · StartMail · Runbox · Disroot · Migadu · Proton Mail · GoDaddy · IONOS · OVHcloud · Hostinger · Strato · SiteGround · Hetzner · All-Inkl · Vivaldi Mail · Bluewin (Swisscom)

If your provider is not listed, use the Setup manually (custom IMAP / SMTP) tile, see Setting up any provider. You will need the server details your provider publishes on its help pages.

The first sync takes a while. YouniqMail loads the message list first, then the contents in the background. With large mailboxes this can take some time. You can start working in the meantime. After that, the server reports new mail by itself; there is no fetch interval to set.

Check the folder mapping. YouniqMail usually detects Sent, Drafts, Trash, Spam and Archive by itself. With providers using unusual folder names, a look at Mapping folders is worth it.

Adjust the account color. Every account automatically gets a color. It appears as a colored border on the left of the emails in the mail list, by default only in grouped mailboxes such as “All Inboxes”. You change the color under Settings → Email Accounts in the account’s Account Color section. Where the border appears is set under Settings → Mailboxes → Sidebar Listing with Account color border.

Set the order. You can rearrange the accounts in the sidebar by drag and drop.

Select the account under Settings → Email Accounts. There you can change the internal name, the sender name, the notifications and whether the account appears in grouped mailboxes, among other things.

New password or different server: For accounts with a password or app password, Change IMAP/SMTP Settings opens the server details. If you leave a password field empty, the stored password is kept. Accounts that sign in with Microsoft do not have this button. YouniqMail currently does not offer to sign in again for them: if the sign-in has become invalid, for example after a password change, you have to remove the account and add it again.

Removing an account: Delete Email Account removes the account from YouniqMail with all its folders, emails and your own data attached to them, such as tags and notes. Nothing is deleted on the mail server. If you like, YouniqMail also removes the contacts that appear only in this account’s emails. This cannot be undone.

The most common causes:

  • Regular password used where an app password is required
  • Two-step verification not enabled, so no app password available
  • IMAP not enabled with the provider
  • Business account where the administrator blocks access
