The editor

The compose window opens with Ctrl/Cmd + N, via the Compose button at the top left, or as a reply from an open email. It is a separate window: you can keep several drafts open side by side and continue working in your inbox.

The editor writes formatted mail (HTML). The toolbar sits above the text area and offers, among other things, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, bullet and numbered lists, links, quotes, tables, images, alignment, font, font size, and text and background color. The common styles have the usual shortcuts, such as Ctrl/Cmd + B for bold, Ctrl/Cmd + I for italic and Ctrl/Cmd + U for underline.

The Editor mode in the toolbar switches between Visual, HTML source and Markdown. The choice applies to the open window only. Headings are set in Markdown mode. If you then switch back to Visual, they turn into normal paragraphs.

There is no plain text format without formatting as a default.

To open a link in the text, Ctrl/Cmd + click it.

The recipient fields suggest from your contacts as you type, along with contact groups and companies. Your contacts come from the mail you have written and received. Which addresses YouniqMail picks up from it is set under Settings → Mails → Contacts.

Cc, Bcc and Reply-to slide in via the switches next to the field. By default, Cc is already visible. Which fields a new window shows is set under Settings → Compose → Compose at Default Visible Fields.

Sending to many recipients? Take a second to check whether they belong in Bcc: every recipient can see the addresses in To and Cc.

The editor saves automatically to the account’s Drafts folder, every 30 seconds by default, but not while you are typing. The interval is set under Settings → Compose → Compose at Auto-Save Drafts, from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, or Disabled.

If you close a window with unsaved changes, YouniqMail asks: Save as Draft, Don’t Save or Cancel. Don’t Save discards everything since the last automatic save. If a saved draft already exists, Delete Draft removes it entirely.

Ctrl/Cmd + S saves the draft right away.

The checker underlines as you type. Right-clicking a marked word shows suggestions and Add to Dictionary.

You turn it on and off and choose the languages under Settings → Compose → Compose in the Spell Check section. Several languages can be checked at once. If you choose none, the app language applies. On macOS the checker uses the system dictionaries, on Windows and Linux its own dictionaries for the chosen languages. In HTML source mode it is off.

Drop files onto the window or pick them via Attach file. Images go directly into the text via Insert image in the toolbar. Dragged images become attachments.

The total size of all attachments in one email is limited, to 25 MB by default. You set the limit under Settings → Compose → Compose at Max Attachment Size. If an email is over it, YouniqMail shows a warning and does not send it.

If your email mentions an attachment but none is there, YouniqMail warns you before sending. You turn that off at Forgotten attachment warning.

  • Snippets insert frequent phrases by keyword, templates ready-made texts with placeholders.
  • Signatures attach themselves to match the selected sender.
  • PGP and S/MIME encrypt or sign the mail via the switches in the footer. The PGP ones are always there and work once a key is set up; the S/MIME ones appear once a valid certificate is assigned to the account.
  • Sending can be undone: a configurable undo window holds every mail back for a few seconds.
  • Ctrl/Cmd + Enter sends the mail. All shortcuts of the window are listed under Keyboard Shortcuts.
