Setting up iCloud

iCloud Mail admits third-party programs only with an app-specific password, a password generated just for YouniqMail. You never enter your Apple password anywhere.

  1. Open account.apple.com and sign in.
  2. Go to Sign-In and Security → App-Specific Passwords.
  3. Generate a new password and give it a recognizable name, say “YouniqMail”.
  4. Copy the password shown. It is displayed only once.

This requires two-factor authentication on your Apple account; without it, Apple offers no app passwords.

  1. Settings → Email Accounts → Add Email Account
  2. Pick iCloud.
  3. Enter Your name, your iCloud address and the App password you just created. YouniqMail fills in the servers itself: imap.mail.me.com (port 993, SSL/TLS) and smtp.mail.me.com (port 587, STARTTLS).
  4. Test Connection, then Continue and Finish.

Connection failed despite the right password: Usually the regular Apple password was entered instead of the app password. iCloud always rejects it.

Custom domain on iCloud+: Addresses of a custom domain running through iCloud+ work with the same servers and likewise via app password. The wizard uses the address you entered as the username. If iCloud rejects the sign-in with it, set up the account via Setup manually (custom IMAP / SMTP): with your own address, your iCloud address as the username and the servers above.

Password reset: Resetting your Apple password invalidates all app passwords. Generate a new one and enter it under Settings → Email Accounts for the account with Change IMAP/SMTP Settings.
