CalDAV calendars

Calendar invitations arrive as email, but the appointment belongs in the calendar. The CalDAV integration closes that gap: accept an invitation, and YouniqMail files the appointment straight into your CalDAV calendar. Nextcloud, iCloud, Fastmail, Radicale, Baikal and other CalDAV servers qualify.

Invitations work without the integration too

Section titled “Invitations work without the integration too”

The basics are built in: incoming invitations (.ics) appear as a card with title, time, location, organizer and the buttons Accept, Maybe and Decline. Show attendees expands the guest list, Change response corrects an answer you already gave. The response goes to the organizer as a standards-compliant email; if you are offline, it waits in the outbox.

Add to Calendar opens the appointment in your system’s calendar app, with up to two reminders that you set under Settings → Mails → Calendar Invitation in Default reminders. That is also where you turn the cards off entirely.

The CalDAV integration adds the automatic route: the entry in your calendar on the server, so the appointment also lives where your phone looks.

  1. Open Settings → Integrations → CalDAV Calendar and turn on Enable CalDAV Calendar.
  2. Choose Add account and fill in Name, Server URL, Username and Password. As Auth Method, Basic Auth fits almost every time.
  3. Discover fetches the server’s calendars. The first one becomes the default; pick another with Set as default.
  4. Turn on Automatically add accepted invitations to default calendar.

Test only checks the credentials. You find the server URL in your provider’s documentation under the keyword CalDAV. For Nextcloud it ends in /remote.php/dav; iCloud requires an app-specific password, just like in account setup. Google only allows CalDAV with an OAuth access token that YouniqMail cannot obtain on its own, so the integration is not suitable for Google Calendar.

From then on it runs on the side: accept or answer with Maybe, and the appointment lands in the default calendar, with time, location and attendees from the invitation. Decline, and YouniqMail removes an appointment it created that way. If the organizer sends an updated invitation, your next response replaces the entry instead of creating a second one. Invitations that only change a single occurrence of a series are not transferred, so the stored series stays untouched.

Some providers, such as iCloud or Nextcloud, already file invitations into the calendar on their own. Then you do not need the switch; the server rejects a second entry for the same invitation anyway.

For rules there is the action Add to calendar: if the email contains an invitation, it transfers it; a cancellation from the organizer removes the appointment. Emails without an invitation are entered as a one-hour appointment at the time of the email, with the subject as title.

If you are offline or the calendar server is not answering, YouniqMail keeps the change and makes it as soon as the server is reachable again, no matter when the reply mail leaves the outbox. While something is waiting, the account under Settings → Integrations → CalDAV Calendar shows a note with Try again now and Discard. If the server refuses a change for good or does not accept it within a week, YouniqMail tells you.
